Superstitions or Logic

India has a long history of ancient superstitions based on popular and religious beliefs that people still believe in, and not only in rural areas.  I am not defending them or going against them, but simply sharing the possible reasoning that might just make us understand the origin of them all. Some may not have any logic but some surprisingly sound scientifically right.  Here are some of them with the logic why it happened: ·        Avoid Standing Under Peepal Tree At Night  It is common sense, that we were taught in school and you have probably forgotten about it. In the morning, when photosynthesis happens, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide, change it into energy and give out oxygen in the air which we breathe in but at the night, it is the opposite. At night, plants exhale carbon dioxide while there is a lack of sunlight.  ·        Lemon & Green Chillies This one is the most common one and many of ...

Dying Heritage of India

Image
India, no doubt is a very big country. It is big also because of its diversity and racial character. More than 3000 castes 432 tribal communities, believers of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikh, Jain, Buddhism, and Zorastrian have been living together for centuries. Over 1650 dialects are spoken by the people of India. The harmony among the people of India is worth mentioning.   The planners and policymakers of India have been addressing many problems and concerns of this country. They are also addressing the need of the craftsmen and their craftsmanship but probably the issue is so vast and complicated that the issue has not been touched in complete form. In most of the states of India, Crafts Boards are looking after the problems of the craftsmen and their crafts. These Boards are also involved in promoting the dying crafts by way of initiating market links, entrepreneurship skills, organizing crafts  melas,  and  bazaars , helping the craftsmen to export their p...

CHILD MARRIAGE

27% of girls in India are  married before their 18th birthday  and 7% are  married before the age of 15 . According to UNICEF, India has the highest absolute number of child brides in the world – 15,509,000. Incidents of underage marriage have fallen so steeply in Bihar, UP, and Rajasthan that West Bengal and Tripura have now emerged as the states worst afflicted with this social scourge. A toxic cocktail of the raging pandemic, economic crisis, and closed schools for months is exacerbating social ills like early marriages.   In India, child marriage is also driven by: Gender inequality : Child marriage is driven by gender inequality and the belief that girls are somehow inferior to boys.  Poverty:  Child marriage is more common among  poorer households , with many families marrying off their daughters to reduce their perceived economic burden. Girls are often married off at a younger age because  less dowry  is expected for young...

Dowry: Threat to Society

Image
The Dowry  system is a pre-condition for marriage from the groom’s family to demand dowry in cash or kind from the bride’s family. After marriage, some families demand more dowry, and when it is not fulfilled- either because of the inability of the bride’s family or the denial of the bride herself- the groom and his family abuse and kill the bride. In one of the cases reported in   Bengaluru   in January 2020, a few weeks after marriage, a husband demanded cash despite receiving 1kg gold in dowry as per his demands. When the extra demand was denied, he burnt his wife.   In some cases, to escape the punishment by law, the husband and his family do not kill the woman directly but harass her mentally and physically forcing her to commit suicide.  A similar case was reported in   Kerala   last year when a 27-year-old woman wa...

Menstruation: A Taboo Topic

Image
In India Menstruation is a still a huge taboo topic till date. Even today in 2020, a woman or a girl is not allowed to enter a kitchen or go to a temple,  touch a jar of pickles, and whatnot. Girls are treated unclean even when they have an access to self-hygiene products. Nearly 70 female students at an institute in Gujarat’s Bhuj were pressured to remove their undergarments by their principal to prove that they were not menstruating. This came after the hostel warden complained to the principal that some of them had broken the norms that were supposed to follow during their menstruation. What were these norms? The girls were not supposed to enter the kitchen or the temple on the hostel premise, nor were they allowed to touch fellow hostellers while on their periods.    Move over equality, women still have to fight for being treated with dignity. For not being treated as unclean and dirty while menstruating.  No girl should have to feel ashamed of menstruating. That...

Reality to Face

“We spend much of our lives going about completely blind to reality, and yet we still have the gall to act victimized when it invariably catches up to us.” – Nenia Campbell ·        You cannot always rely on others. You will need positive life capabilities while no one else is around. In this manner, you can rely upon yourself to get out of the problem. It is an unhappy reality of life that we can not count on other people most of the time. ·        Make time for your passion. Whatever you love doing, make sure you do it at a set time. This is important because you find that friends, family, your boss, and your pet will be constantly yapping at your heels trying to steal your time. Do things that bring happiness and a sense of satisfaction. ·        You accept challenges. In order to grow in being sociable, stronger both physically and mentally, you have to accept challenges on a regular basis. You...
